What is CLP?

The regulation is based on the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) and is designed to ensure that the hazards associated with chemicals are clearly communicated to consumers.

The CLP regulation applies to all chemical substances and mixtures that are manufactured or imported into the EU. It requires that these substances and mixtures be classified based on their hazardous properties and that this information be communicated through labeling and packaging.

The classification process involves the assessment of the hazardous properties of a chemical substance or mixture, such as its flammability, toxicity, and reactivity. Based on this assessment, the substance or mixture is assigned to one or more hazard classes and categories, and appropriate hazard statements and pictograms are assigned to it.

The CLP Regulation is enforced by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and national authorities. It aims to protect human health and the environment by ensuring that the hazards of chemicals are clearly communicated and that appropriate safety measures are taken.

Candles and Wax Melts fall under this regulation, so if you sell these items you must comply with the regulations by using CLP labels.

In order to sell your candles and craft products to the public, you must ensure that all of your products are CLP compliant.

What information should be on a CLP label?

The regulations state that certain information must be included on a CLP label:

– Supplier address and phone number 

– Product identifiers

– Hazard pictograms & statements

– Allergen information

– Signal words

– Precautionary statements

Labels for candles must also include safety information. This can be conveyed through the use of text or pictograms. We offer the option to include 4 candle safety pictograms on your CLP labels for candles.

The CLP regulation also requires that suppliers of chemicals provide Safety Data Sheets (SDS) which contain detailed information about the hazards, safe handling, and emergency measures for the chemical substance or mixture.

Can I use one CLP label for all my scents?

Unfortunately, no. Each fragrance oil used must have its own CLP label. This is because they all contain different ingredients, some of which may not contain allergens or hazardous ingredients.

Where should a CLP label be placed?

The CLP label should be firmly affixed directly to the packaging of the product, and visible at point of sale. It must be on the final product itself, not on any outer packaging that may be discarded and separated from the product.
